Blue Screen on Windows: What It Means and How to Fix It

· · ⏱️ 7 min read

What a blue screen is

The blue screen (BSOD) is Windows protecting itself: something low-level (a driver, RAM or disk) failed and the system stops before corrupting data. A one-off blue screen after an update is no big deal; the problem is when it repeats: then there is a specific cause to find.

The most common codes

Note the code at the very bottom (or photograph it with your phone): MEMORY_MANAGEMENT points to RAM; DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION to drivers; CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED and UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION are usually disk or corrupt system. With the code, half the diagnosis is done.

Steps to fix it

First, undo the last change: if it started after installing a program or plugging in new hardware, remove it and test. Then open a Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow (repairs system files) followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Finish with Windows Update fully applied and a full Defender scan in case malware is involved (virus cleanup).

Update drivers, one at a time

The number one cause is graphics or network drivers. Update them from the manufacturer site (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel or your laptop brand), one at a time, testing in between. Never use third-party "driver updaters": they install wrong versions and are a classic source of new blue screens.

When to call a technician

If it blue-screens in a loop without letting you in, consistently points to RAM or disk, or persists after sfc, drivers and antivirus, it needs tools (memtest, disk SMART, minidumps). We do it with you in the free diagnosis.

FAQ

Do I lose my files with a blue screen?

Normally not: the system stops to protect them. Save often anyway.

Is a single blue screen serious?

No. Worry if it repeats or stops you working.

Can it be a virus?

It can. If it comes with slowness or strange programs, run antivirus before touching drivers.

How much does fixing it cost?

If it's software, diagnosis is free and repair gets a closed quote. If it's hardware (RAM, disk), you approve the part cost first.
