Why your PC is slow (the 4 real causes)
It is almost always one of these four: disk over 85% full, too many programs launching with Windows, malware eating resources in the background, or old hardware (a mechanical HDD and 4 GB of RAM don't go far in 2026). Before buying anything, spend 20 minutes on the steps below: half the time the PC runs fine again for free.
Full disk and startup programs
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, sort by size and uninstall what you don't use. Then run Disk Cleanup (search it in Start, tick Temporary files and Windows Update Cleanup) and empty the recycle bin. Full walkthrough in how to clean junk files.
Then press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to the Startup apps tab and disable everything you don't need at boot. Each program you remove saves seconds every morning.
Rule out malware first
An infected PC runs slow even with an empty disk. Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender (Windows Security → Virus protection → Scan options → Full scan) and, for a second opinion, Malwarebytes Free. Remove threats and reboot. Details in how to remove viruses free.
The real leap: SSD and RAM
If it's still slow after cleaning and disinfecting, the bottleneck is physical. Swapping a mechanical HDD for an SSD (about $30-40) makes boot and apps roughly 5x faster: the best value upgrade there is. With 4 GB of RAM, going to 8-16 GB finishes the job if you use a browser with many tabs.
When to call a technician
Call us if: the PC takes over 5 minutes to boot even when clean, the disk sits at 100% usage with no clear cause, there are recurring blue screens, or you suspect hardware failure (noises, random shutdowns, extreme heat). Those get diagnosed in minutes live, but would cost you hours blind.
FAQ
Does formatting speed up a PC?
Yes, but it's the last resort: you lose time reinstalling everything. Try cleanup, startup trim and antivirus first.
Do paid "optimizers" work?
No. Windows already includes everything (Cleanup, Defender, startup). Paid optimizers do nothing you can't do free.
How much RAM do I need in 2026?
8 GB for office and normal browsing; 16 GB if you work with many tabs, editing or VMs.
SSD or more RAM first?
SSD, almost always: the leap shows from the first boot. RAM only if memory usage is routinely above 80%.
