Visual map of your disk
Stop guessing: download WizTree (free, blazing fast) and run it as administrator. In seconds it shows a map of which folders eat the disk, sorted by size. 90% of "no reason" cases get solved staring at this map for 2 minutes.
The usual culprits
In frequency order: system restores (tens of GB in restore points), hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys (huge with lots of RAM), game/launcher folders with caches, Windows.old after upgrading, and iPhone backups in iTunes. All legitimate, all removable or movable.
How to really free it
With the map in front: limit system restore to 3-5% of disk (System Properties → Protection), disable hibernation with powercfg /hibernate off in admin console if you don't use it, delete Windows.old from Disk Cleanup (system files button) and move games and backups to another disk. For general cleanup see the step-by-step cleaning guide.
If space comes back alone
You free 20 GB and a week later it's full again: something generates junk nonstop (a program looping logs, antivirus fighting, or stuck updates retrying). Watch which folder grows with WizTree two days in a row: the culprit's name reveals itself.
When to call a technician
If the map shows the disk full of "unknown", if space swings wildly, or you suspect the SSD (extreme slowness + full), it needs SMART and live process inspection. We do it in the free diagnosis.
FAQ
What is WizTree and is it safe?
A free portable disk analyzer (no install). It only reads sizes; it deletes nothing by itself.
Can I delete Windows.old?
Yes, a few days after upgrading and checking all is well. Do it from Disk Cleanup, not by hand.
Is disabling hibernation bad?
No if you don't use it: it frees as many GB as RAM you have. If you hibernate daily, keep it.
Why does it fill up every week?
Some program generates junk in a loop. Spot it comparing the map two days apart.
