Normal noise vs bad noise
A gentle hum that rises while gaming is normal. What's not: rattling, scraping or vibration, full blast at idle, or a fan that stops and restarts constantly. Find which one first: stop each fan one second with a finger (carefully, in the center) and listen for which silence gives away the culprit.
Dust: the usual culprit
Dust unbalances blades and clogs heatsinks, so fans spin faster for the same job. With the PC off and unplugged, use compressed air in short bursts (holding blades still so they don't spin wild) across grilles, fans and the CPU heatsink. Half the time the noise drops by half.
Only roars under load?
If it only roars gaming or rendering, it's probably healthy and just working: confirm temps with HWiNFO. If the CPU tops 90 ºC, the problem is cooling (old thermal paste, badly seated heatsink), not the fan. Note: if it also shuts down alone, deal with it now.
Broken or unbalanced fan
Rhythmic rattling or vibration you feel on the desk = dead bearing. No fix: replace it. Case fans cost $10-20 and swap with 4 screws and one connector; CPU/laptop fans are better in expert hands. Note size (120/140mm) and connector (3 or 4 pin) before buying.
When to call a technician
If it stays the same after cleaning, if it's a laptop (they're fiddly to open) or thermal paste needs changing and you've never done it: that's 30 minutes of bench time. Ask for a free diagnosis and we'll tell you if it's cleaning, a fan or something else.
FAQ
Is it bad to use the PC when it's very loud?
The noise itself isn't, but it usually warns of heat or wear: look at it before it turns into shutdowns.
Can I oil a noisy fan?
A stopgap: a drop of thin oil buys a dead bearing weeks, it doesn't resurrect it. Replace the fan.
Why does it roar only at startup then go quiet?
Normal: at boot they spin at max for a few seconds until the board takes control. Worry if it never quiets.
How much does replacing a fan cost?
Part $10-20 for case; on laptops add labor. We quote closed after a free diagnosis.
